Academic Advising, Sept. 30, 2022

Academic Advising Webinar, Sept. 30, 2022

Question and Answer

Q: When will students be meeting with their major adviser to enroll in classes for next semester?

A: Students can schedule to meet with their adviser now.

Q: How does my son identify who his adviser is? He does not remember who advised him during New Student Orientation. He is a finance major not yet admitted to the Broad school.

A: Here's the contact information for meeting with a Business adviser: broad.msu.edu/undergraduate/advising.

Q: Do students schedule an appointment with the same adviser that helped them for fall 2022?

A: Yes, however, if your student prefers meeting with someone else, that can be done too.

Q: Will MSU still be doing asynchronous and synchronous classes in the future? Students are losing out on meeting their peers and faculty in person, and that does make a difference. They need to get out of their rooms or study rooms for classes as COVID took a big toll on these kids. Has this been discussed?

A: MSU has offered both synchronous- and asynchronous-learning options for decades. Students should look for the options that work best for their learning styles based on the subject of the classes. Advisers can help them in this process if needed.

Answered Live in the Webinar
The below questions were answered live during the webinar. Responses can be seen in the recording of the webinar here.

Q: Is an advising appointment required before a student can register for classes?

Q: My freshman in Lyman Briggs said they have been trying to get an advising appointment for almost two weeks, and that no one let them into the "Walk-in Wednesday" Zoom meeting posted on their website. Perhaps these are in-person now? Is there a way to open up more appointments with the Lyman Briggs advisers?
